Most schools that launch a parent app see heavy downloads in week one and very little use after month one.

The reason is consistent: the app shows what the school wants to broadcast, not what the parent came to find out.

The four things parents open an app for

Fees. What is due, what was paid, a receipt they can keep, and ideally the ability to pay from the same screen.

Attendance. Not a monthly summary — a running figure, so a problem is visible while it can still be fixed.

Academic progress. Marks, results and history for their own child.

What is required of them. A pending document, a form to sign, a fee date approaching, a circular that affects their child specifically.

Everything else — photo galleries, event banners, a feed — is pleasant, and is not why anyone installs it.

Why most parent apps fail at exactly this

Because the data lives elsewhere. If fees sit in a register, attendance in a department file and results with the examination section, the app has to be fed by uploads.

An upload-fed app is worse than no app. It puts a figure that was true last Tuesday on an official screen, and the school then has to defend it to a parent who paid on Wednesday. After two such incidents staff stop trusting it and tell parents to call instead — which is where you started, now with a licence fee.

A parent app is therefore not really an app decision. It is a consequence of whether fees, attendance and results sit in one system.

What good looks like

The parent sees their child’s ledger as the office sees it, attendance as it stands today, results as published, transport details, assignments and learning materials, and whatever is pending from them. No upload, no sync, no gap — a window onto the same record rather than a copy of it.

The adoption problem, honestly

Some parents will not use an app, and some families share one phone. A school that routes everything through an app alone will exclude people.

The workable arrangement is that the app answers routine questions for families who will use it, which frees the office to properly handle the families who need a phone call. That serves both groups better than treating everyone the same.

How DigiERP handles it

The student and parent login reads the live record: fee dues and online payment, receipts, attendance, academic history, assignments, transport details and learning materials. Parent accounts are unlimited under one flat annual contract, so there is no per-user reason to give access to some families and not others.
