Most Indian schools adopting an ERP are not migrating from another ERP. They are moving off a working arrangement of registers, Excel files and Tally.
That is a harder change than a software migration, because the thing being replaced is partly habit.
What you are actually moving
Four things, with different difficulty:
Student master data — usually an Excel file, sometimes several. The easiest to move and the most important to get right, because everything else attaches to it.
Fee data — the structure, what each student has been charged, what they have paid, and any concessions. This is where migrations go wrong, because the opening balance per student has to be exactly right or every parent conversation starts with a dispute.
Academic history — marks and results for past years. Needed for report cards, TCs and transcripts later.
Staff data — records, salary structure, leave balances.
Where Tally fits afterwards
A common worry is that Tally has to be abandoned. It usually does not.
Most schools keep Tally for statutory accounting and let the ERP handle fee collection, with a periodic summary flowing across. Your accountant keeps the tool they know; the office gets student-wise dues Tally was never designed to give.
Decide this explicitly before implementation, because the integration point depends on it.
The sequence that works
Students first, then fee structure, then opening balances, then history. Verify each stage before the next.
Verify opening balances against your own register for a sample of thirty students across classes, including concession cases. If those thirty are right, the file is right. If three are wrong, stop and find out why before going live.
Timing it
Start between terms, not during admission season. Go live at the start of a fee cycle, so the first collection runs cleanly in the new system rather than half in each.
Implementation for a typical school is one to two weeks, most of it data loading rather than configuration.
Running in parallel: how long is sensible
Run the register alongside for one fee cycle, not a year. A month of parallel running catches the real errors; a year of it means staff never commit to the new system and you maintain two records indefinitely.
Set a date on which the register stops being the official record, and tell everyone.
What goes wrong most often
Only current students are loaded. Then the first request for an old TC sends you back to the cupboard and nobody trusts the system.
Concessions are not migrated. Dues come out wrong for exactly the families most sensitive about it.
Staff are trained once. People who join in month three learn from colleagues, badly. Unlimited training matters more than it sounds.
How DigiERP handles it
Complete historical data migration is part of implementation rather than a priced project — students, fees, academic history and staff, from Excel, registers or your existing system. Go-live typically one to two weeks, with unlimited training during and after.
