Most school management software is sold as board-agnostic, and most of it is. The differences that matter to a CBSE school are narrow but specific, and they appear at the end of the year rather than during the demo.
Assessment structure
CBSE assessment is not a single annual mark. It combines periodic tests, notebook submission, subject enrichment and term examinations, weighted into a final grade per subject.
Software that stores one mark per subject per term will not produce the report card your school actually issues, and the teachers will keep a parallel spreadsheet. Ask to see the assessment structure configured, not described.
Report cards in your format
Report card layout is one of the most-customised documents in any school, and one parents judge you on. Grades, descriptors, co-scholastic areas, attendance, class teacher remarks.
The question for a vendor is not whether report cards are supported, but who changes the format when you want a column moved — you, or a support ticket that takes three weeks in the middle of result season.
Transfer certificates
TCs carry specified particulars and are requested at awkward moments, often years later for a sibling’s admission or a verification.
A TC should be generated from the student record with the particulars filled in, numbered and logged — not typed into a Word template kept on one computer. The log matters: when a TC is questioned, you want a record of what was issued and when.
What is the same as any other school
Admissions, fees, attendance, transport, hostel, payroll and parent communication work the same regardless of board. Those are the bulk of daily work, and no CBSE-specific product is needed for them.
Be sceptical of software marketed as “CBSE software” at a premium — usually it is general school software with report card templates, which is reasonable but not a different product.
The questions to ask in a demo
- Configure one subject’s assessment weighting in front of me.
- Generate a report card for one student and change one column.
- Generate a TC for a student who left two years ago.
- Show me what a parent sees for the same student.
Four requests, fifteen minutes, and they separate products far better than a feature list does.
